Loose Emerald Buying Questions
What is a certified emerald?
A certified emerald is a natural emerald that comes with a report from an independent gemological laboratory. The report identifies the stone as natural beryl, records its weight, measurements, shape and color, and states whether any clarity enhancement was detected. Where a stone has a report, the issuing laboratory is shown on its MYGEMSET product page.
Are emeralds treated?
Most are. Emeralds commonly have small surface-reaching fissures, and filling them with oil or resin to improve clarity is a long-established practice. Lab reports usually describe the degree of enhancement. The treatment recorded for each stone is stated on its product page.
Why do emeralds have inclusions?
Emerald forms under conditions that leave internal features in almost every crystal. These inclusions are often called the stone's jardin, French for garden, and they are expected in a natural emerald. An emerald with no visible inclusions is rare.
Is emerald suitable for an engagement ring?
Yes, with care. Emerald rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, but its inclusions make it less tough than sapphire or ruby. A protective setting helps, and emeralds should not be cleaned in ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
How can I see the emerald before buying?
Every MYGEMSET stone is filmed in 4K video, so you see the actual emerald you are buying, not a stock image.
