Natural Emerald from Colombia: The World Standard for Fine Green
Colombian emeralds are the benchmark against which all other emeralds are measured. The Muzo, Chivor, and Coscuez mines in Boyacá department have produced vivid, warm-toned green stones for over 500 years — and the country remains responsible for roughly 70–90% of the world’s fine emerald supply. At MYGEMSET, our Colombian emeralds are sourced directly from cutters in Bogotá’s emerald district and certified by recognized gemological laboratories.
What Makes Colombian Emeralds Exceptional
Color: The finest Colombian emeralds show a vivid, slightly warm green — a pure, saturated color with a hint of yellow that gemologists describe as “Colombian green.” This warmth comes from chromium and vanadium, without the blue-green or grey overtones common in Zambian or Brazilian stones. GRS designates top specimens as “Vivid Green,” the highest color grade.
Jardin: Emeralds almost universally contain inclusions — called jardin (French for garden). In Colombian stones, the jardin typically consists of three-phase inclusions (liquid, gas bubble, and solid crystal), which serve as natural fingerprints of Colombian origin. A completely eye-clean Colombian emerald is extraordinarily rare and exponentially more valuable.
Origin premium: A GIA or CDTec-certified Colombian emerald commands 30–100% more than equivalent stones from Zambia, Brazil, or Zimbabwe. The premium reflects both historical prestige and genuine color quality differences in top-grade material.
Emerald Treatment: Oil, Resin & Cedar
Oil treatment is the most traditional and accepted enhancement for emeralds. Cedar oil (colorless) has been used for centuries to fill surface-reaching fractures, improving apparent clarity without changing color. The trade universally accepts “minor” oiling — GIA classifies treatments as None, Minor, Moderate, or Significant. For investment purposes, “None” or “Minor” oiling is preferred.
Resin (Opticon) and polymer treatments are more intrusive and significantly reduce value. Any certificate should explicitly state the filler type and degree. All MYGEMSET Colombian emeralds carry certificates with full treatment disclosure — we do not offer stones with significant or undisclosed treatment.
Certification for Colombian Emeralds
GIA: The world’s most recognized laboratory. GIA origin reports for emeralds include color grading, treatment status, and geographic origin. A GIA “Colombia” determination carries maximum market credibility.
GRS: Based in Switzerland, GRS is the preferred lab for top collector and auction-grade emeralds. GRS color designations like “Vivid Green” and “Colombian type color” are used by major auction houses.
CDTec: Colombia’s own gemological laboratory, based in Bogotá, issues origin certificates widely recognized in the Colombian trade and increasingly internationally.
