Loose Sapphire Buying Questions
What is a certified sapphire?
A certified sapphire is a natural sapphire that comes with a report from an independent gemological laboratory. The report identifies the stone, records its weight, measurements, shape and color, and states whether heat or other treatment was detected. The issuing laboratory is named on each MYGEMSET product page.
What is the difference between heated and unheated sapphire?
A heated sapphire has been exposed to high temperature to improve its color or clarity; an unheated sapphire has not. Heating is a long-established, stable treatment and most sapphires on the market are heated. Unheated stones of comparable quality are rarer and usually priced higher.
Is sapphire a good stone for an engagement ring?
Yes. Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond among common gemstones, so it holds up to daily wear. See our natural sapphire engagement ring buying guide for how to choose color, cut and size.
What is a padparadscha sapphire?
Padparadscha is the trade name for sapphire with a delicate mix of pink and orange. It is one of the rarest sapphire colors, and laboratories apply the term only when a stone falls within their defined color range.
How do I know what the stone really looks like?
Every MYGEMSET stone is filmed in 4K video, so you see the actual sapphire you are buying, not a stock image. Stones ship in tamper-evident sealed gem jars and arrive in 4–7 business days.
