Natural Sapphire from Sri Lanka (Ceylon): The World’s Most Diverse Sapphire Origin

Sri Lanka — historically known in the gem trade as Ceylon — has been producing exceptional sapphires for over 2,000 years. The island’s gem-bearing gravels in the Ratnapura, Elahera, and Kataragama districts yield a broader range of sapphire varieties than any other single source: vivid blues, pastel cornflowers, delicate pinks, golden yellows, color-change varieties, and the rarest of all — padparadscha. For variety, depth of history, and consistent quality, Ceylon remains the world’s premier sapphire origin.

Ceylon Sapphire: Color Varieties

Blue Ceylon sapphire is the category that built the island’s gemological reputation. Ranging from soft “cornflower” blue (medium-light, vivid) to deep royal blue, the finest specimens rival Burmese material in color intensity while typically showing better clarity and more consistent size availability. GRS designates top blue Ceylon sapphires as “Cornflower Blue” or “Royal Blue” — the former particularly associated with Ceylon origin.

Pink Ceylon sapphire ranges from delicate baby pink to vivid hot pink. Fine unheated pink sapphires from Ceylon in the 1–3 carat range are among the best value propositions in the collector market — GRS certified, genuinely unheated, with clean clarity and attractive color at $200–$800 per carat.

Yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) is highly prized in South Asian markets. Ceylon produces vivid canary yellow to golden yellow sapphires that are often untreated. Large clean yellow sapphires above 5 carats are relatively accessible from Ceylon and command strong prices in Indian and Southeast Asian markets.

Padparadscha — the pink-orange variety — is associated almost exclusively with Ceylon. While Madagascar and Tanzania produce occasional padparadscha, the GRS “Padparadscha” designation on a Sri Lanka origin stone carries the highest collector premium. See our guide: What is a Padparadscha Sapphire?

Color change sapphire from Ceylon shifts from blue-violet in daylight to purple-red under incandescent light. Sri Lanka produces some of the most dramatic color change sapphires available — see our guide: What is a Color Change Sapphire?

Ceylon vs Burma vs Madagascar Sapphire

Burmese sapphires command the highest premiums due to historical prestige and scarcity, but Ceylon offers superior value in most categories. For blue sapphires, Ceylon produces comparable quality to Burma at 20–40% lower prices. For pink, yellow, and color-change varieties, Ceylon is the primary source globally. Madagascar has emerged as a strong source for blue sapphires since the 2000s but lacks the historical prestige premium of Ceylon.
